Another cult classic. This effects pedal was introduced in 1978 and earned its legendary status throughout the years. Its history and evolution were quite complex, with at least 13 different editions produced. The „2” from 1988 (its circuit used the famed LM308N chip) is the most sought after by collectors and guitar freaks. The RAT* became an exemplary distortion pedal – a reference point which perfectly illustrates what we mean when we say „distortion” to begin with. As the name would suggest, it is loud, dirty and raw, while keeping the sound fat and beefy. Because of those qualities, it has become a weapon of choice for punk and alternative rock guitarists. Its dirty and cheeky „in your face” sound never gets old and it has defined many musical genres which focus on raw energy. In spite of this, the RAT* can be very versatile – when we turn the GAIN knob we can move between a subtle, bluesy crunch and a saturated alternative rock distortion. With the tone filter pot we can cut the highs – interestingly, it works in a reverse way than in other pedals. The RAT* really needs no introduction, since it was used by so many top guitarists – it was a regular unit on pedalboards of bands like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Nirvana, to mention just a few.
I have built the replica with keeping all subtleties of the 1988 version, including the rare LM308N chip. Its housed in an aluminum stompbox, with a raw graphic design which matches its personality.
- Requires stabilized 9V power supply (2.1/5.5 plug with “plus on the outside”)
- Can be used with a voltage higher than 9V, but not exceeding 18V.
